Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity
I worked for Robert Mueller. He embodied the FBI's motto.
I sat in the daily morning briefing in the Director’s conference room at FBI Headquarters in the Spring of 2011. In just a few months, Robert Mueller’s mandatory ten-year term limit as director would expire. Near the briefing’s end, after each Assistant Director succinctly shared some noteworthy item, Mueller, a man of few words, had something to say. He talked about steps being taken to prepare for his departure and the transition to an interim director and ultimately a new appointee. When Mueller asked the assembled executives whether they had any questions, one less-senior attendee posed a query that made me wince. Those who had been around any length of time knew this wasn’t Mueller’s kind of question.
